How Did Gloria Became the Blues Theme Song

St. Louis Blues May Have Replaced Gloria With Worst Song Ever

The St. Louis Blues road to a Stanley Cup was one of the most magical rides ever and Laura Branigan's "Gloria" provided the soundtrack. The follow up is rarely as good.

The St. Louis Blues might have come along the wonder that was Gloria by accident. It had to have been kismet or fate or in the stars.

There is a saying in the movie business that a sequel rarely lives up to the original. That is definitely true for the song choice that happened upon the Blues in their follow up.

During a video conference reuniting many of the Blues Cup members, 25 to be exact, and hosted by Kathryn Tappen and Jim Hughson, the worst was confirmed. It was suspected months ago, but now we know what we all feared – the Blues' victory song during what was played of 2019-20 was Party All The Time.

Rarely, if ever, do I suggest people avoid certain things. We all have our own taste. That said, if you have not heard this song, I do encourage you to say away.

It is a travesty of music. Can you really call it music? Hmm, yes, I suppose you have to since it has chords and a beat.

The one thing going for this song is the fact that Eddie Murphy actually has a decent voice. Who knows if they had some version of autotune back in 1985, but he did a good job on it overall.

I also get the reason the Blues might have chosen it. It is upbeat and has the same cheesy, yet fun, feeling to it as Gloria did.

However, while Gloria had mixed results at first, it brought a feeling with it that intertwined with the team and all they were doing as the season and the playoffs went along. This song just feels like it sticks out like a sore thumb.

The only thing redeeming about this song, other than the fact the Blues were using it, is seeing a vintage Rick James trying to act in the music video.

At least he looked somewhat normal in that video. Not like what we would see in small blurbs on the Dave Chappelle Show.

I just cannot place it. I never liked this song, but when I first heard Gloria I thought it was kind of ridiculous.

However, the difference is I simply cannot see this one growing on me. Maybe if the Blues return to the ice for some sort of playoff run during the summer and we give this song more context…just maybe. I don't see it happening. It doesn't have the same feel-good vibe.

For those of you who like it, more power to you. I know there will be some that like it because there has to be yin to all yang, even if the numbers are slightly unbalanced on either side.

Vince Dunn did make it seem as though the team was not as invested in it as Gloria. "This year we have a new one," Dunn said in the conference and reported in the Post-Dispatch. "We haven't really been too focused on it. It's kind of just been whatever. We didn't want to carry (Gloria) over from last year. Kind of just left it in the past."

There is always time to change, especially with the current break going on. Fingers crossed
